Fire Guts Popular Anambra Timber Market, Destroys Shops

A yet-to-be-ascertained number of shops at the Ogbo Osisi Timber Market Bridgehead, Onitsha in Anambra State were on Saturday night gutted by fire after a fire broke out in the market. 

At the time of filing this report, The Eastern Updates has not been able to ascertain the cause of the fire but it was gathered that it started late in the evening on Saturday.

Confirming the incident in a statement, the Anambra State fire chief, Martin Agbili, said the men of the state fire service have been deployed in the fire scene.

Agbili added that men of the state fire service and other emergency responders had been mobilized to the scene of the incident.

“I have deployed our firefighters to the fire scene. They are there fighting the fire,” Agbili said.

The timber market’s fire was the second major fire incident in the country on Saturday after a Conoil filling station in Abuja was completely razed down by an inferno.

The Eastern Updates has a few days ago reported that no fewer than 12 blocks of shops have been destroyed by fire at Nkwo Umunze Market, Umunze in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The Eastern Updates gathered that although no life was lost the fire started around 6.16 am on Friday from the New Life Line of the market.

The cause of the fire had not been ascertained as of the time of filing this report, but eyewitnesses in the market said goods worth millions of naira were destroyed in the inferno.

Confirming the incident, the state fire chief, Martin Agbili, said the cause of the fire was still unknown.
