The youth wing of an Igbo pressure group, Orluzurumee Cultural Union (OCU), has expressed anger at the gruesome murder of two traditional rulers in Imo State by unknown gunmen.
The Eastern Updates recalls that unknown gunmen killed some traditional rulers during their meeting at Nnenasa community, Njaba Local Government Area in Orlu extraction of Imo State, last Tuesday.
The slain Imo monarchs were, Eze Anayochukwu Durueburuo, Obi of Okwudor Autonomous Community, and Eze Sampson Osunwa of Ihebineowerre Community.
Reacting to the ugly incident via a press release forwarded to DAILY POST on Sunday, Orluzurumee Cultural Union, called on Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State to urgently convene stakeholders and security conference beyond party lines in order to stop the incessant killings in Orlu zone of the State.
The release was jointly signed by the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Ikemba Don Uba; the National Secretary, Comrade Desmond Ugwumba; and Prince Arthur Madumere, National President, MISPON, at the end of the national executive council meeting which deliberated on the general security situation in Orlu.
The group also mandated security agencies in the state to carry out their assigned duties with utmost diligence and professionalism.
The Igbo socio-cultural organization further frowned at the unwarranted arrest and extrajudicial killings of members without proper investigations, urging them to cease since an accused is presumed innocent until a competent court of law says otherwise.
The group also called on Governor Uzodinma to as a matter of public interest, constitute a panel of inquiry into the killings so far in Orlu, stressing that it would assist in getting to the roots of the matter.
According to the group, ‘Orlu zone is not known for spilling of human blood and human life as we all know is sacred and precious in Igbo land. Therefore, the killings and frequent gunshots by yet-to-be identified persons are an aberration and alien to us.
‘No matter the grievances or the motives of those behind the incessant killings and destruction of private and public property, such can never be in the overall interest of all.
‘It is most worrisome that while fear and panic pervade the Orlu, state actors appear helpless and overwhelmed. The traditional rulers were killed just a few poles away from army checkpoint along the Orlu/Owerri expressway leaves much to be desired.
‘All hands must be on deck to arrest this situation, as we prepare to hold a security/economic summit in conjunction with traditional rulers, community leaders, politicians and stakeholders to nip the ugly situation in the bud. The pre security summit will take place in Abuja, while the main summit will hold in Orlu in November’.
