China Says UN Security Council Must Approve Iran Deal

The deal to end the war in Iran will need the approval of the United Nations Security Council, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi indicated on Tuesday.

At the UN headquarters in New York, Yi said: “We believe that once an agreement is reached, it will be submitted to the UN Security Council for endorsement for it to have legitimacy and authority.”

The top diplomat advised the warring parties to stay committed to pursuing a ceasefire and shift ground so that peace can return to the Middle East as soon as possible.

Yi, however, reminded the UN of its obligation to ensure international peace and security, saying the Security Council must step forward and “shoulder its responsibilities.”

Beijing wants global powers to avoid bias in international affairs, noting that unilateral military actions and sanctions outside the UN framework undermine global peace and stability.

China also urged the international community to recommit to the principles of the UN Charter at a time of deepening geopolitical divisions and growing conflicts.

According to Yi, while the UN Charter “remains humanity’s best hope for peace,” it is only as strong as the commitment of those responsible for upholding it.

China, UN Security Council chair for May, hosted a high-level session under the theme: “Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-centered International System.”

Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, will attend a meeting of the “Group of Friends for Peace” on the Ukraine crisis in New York on May 28.

The Minister will also meet with the UN Secretary General and other foreign ministers, and visit Canada from May 28 to 30 at the invitation of the Foreign Affairs Anita Anand.

US President Donald Trump confirmed Friday he would miss his son’s wedding, insisting he had to stay in Washington because of “circumstances pertaining to government.”

Trump had said a day earlier that the Iran war made it “bad timing” for him to attend Donald Trump Jr’s wedding to Bettina Anderson in the Bahamas this weekend.

“While I very much wanted to be with my son, Don Jr., and the newest member of the Trump Family, his soon to be wife, Bettina, circumstances pertaining to Government, and my love for the United States of America, do not allow me to do so,” Trump said on his Truth Social network.

“I feel it is important for me to remain in Washington, D.C., at the White House during this important period of time. Congratulations to Don and Bettina!”

The White House later announced changed travel plans for Trump, saying he would no longer head for planned weekend trip to his New Jersey golf resort and would stay in the US capital instead.

Trump didn’t specify why it was an “important period” although it comes as talks to end the Middle East war appear to be reaching a crunch point.

Iran is examining a new US proposal and the powerful army chief of mediator Pakistan is heading to Tehran.

But tensions are also rising with Cuba, with the United States ramping up its pressure campaign on the communist-run island by indicting former president Raul Castro.

The US military has also dispatched an aircraft carrier and its escort warships to the Caribbean.

United States President, Donald Trump, has decided to hold off on attacking Iran again at the request of leaders from Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Trump disclosed this in a post on his Truth Social media account on Monday.

According to him, the strike was scheduled for Tuesday, but he was asked to hold off because serious negotiations are now taking place between the US and countries in the Middle East, and beyond.
