AFCON 2025: Eagles Thrash Tunisia To Qualify For Round Of 16

Nigeria have qualified for the last 16 of the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations following a 3-2 victory over Tunisia on Saturday night.
The Super Eagles began their tournament with a narrow 2-1 win over Tanzania on Tuesday.
And they came into this game knowing that three points against the Carthage Eagles will put them in control of Group C.
The North Africans had thrashed Uganda 3-0 in their opening fixture and were also keen to qualify.
But Victor Osimhen headed Nigeria into the lead before the break, before goals from Wilfred Ndidi and Ademola Lookman put Eric Chelle’s men in firm control.
Tunisia pulled one back through Montassar Talbi, before a late penalty was converted by Ali Al-Abdi.
The result means Nigeria have six points from two matches, while Tunisia remain second with three points

The Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, will now take place every four years from 2028.

This was revealed by Patrice Motsepe, the president of the Confederation of African Football, CAF, on Saturday.

Since 1968, the tournament has been played every two years.

There was, however, a one-year gap between the 2012 and 2013 editions.

But after the 2027 edition in East Africa and the next one in 2028, it will switch to a four-year cycle.

“We have the most exciting new structure for African football,” Motsepe said.

“I do what is in the interests of Africa. The global calendar has to be significantly more synchronised and harmonised.”

The head coach of the Super Eagles, Eric Chelle, has named his final squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Chelle has trimmed his initial 50-man squad to 28 players.

The most obvious absentee is captain William Troost-Ekong, who announced his retirement from international football last week.

However, vice-captains Wilfred Ndidi and Victor Osimhen make the cut.
