Poland To Withdraw From Ottawa Treaty Banning Mines

Listen to article

Poland’s Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, has suggested that his country may withdraw from the Ottawa Treaty, which bans anti-personnel mines.

If Poland proceeds with the withdrawal, it will become the first EU member state not to be part of the treaty.

There is speculation that the borders with Kaliningrad and Belarus could be mined.

“I will recommend to the Ministry of Defence and the General Staff to give a positive assessment of Poland’s withdrawal from the Ottawa Treaty and, possibly, from the Dublin Convention.

“I mean anti-personnel mines and cluster munitions,” Tusk said.

However, he clarified that he would hold consultations with the Ministry of Defence on the issue.

Tusk also emphasised that Poland would use all available means to ensure its security.

In other news, On Thursday, Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, erstwhile commander of Ukraine’s military forces and now its envoy to the United Kingdom, delivered a piercing critique, asserting that the United States is dismantling the prevailing global framework—a charge that resonates with profound geopolitical implications.

Zaluzhnyi, who orchestrated Ukraine’s resistance during the initial two years of Russia’s comprehensive assault beginning in 2022, voiced this assessment amid efforts by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to recalibrate ties with Washington, strained by a contentious exchange with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House.

The former military luminary emphasized that Ukraine has preserved its sovereignty despite facing enmity and veiled admonitions, not solely from adversaries but also from ostensible partners—a testament to its resilience forged in the crucible of conflict.

Speaking at the esteemed Chatham House in London, Zaluzhnyi’s remarks followed Trump’s abrupt suspension of military assistance and intelligence collaboration with Kyiv, strategic maneuvers designed to compel Zelenskyy toward negotiations with Moscow, conspicuously absent any assurances of security for Ukraine—a policy shift that has ignited fervent debate.
