Pep Guardiola is reportedly preparing to extend his stay as Manchester City’s manager for another year, as The Athletic disclosed on Tuesday, with the 53-year-old set to sign a one-year extension to his existing contract.
Since taking the helm at Manchester City in 2016, Pep Guardiola has firmly established himself as one of the most successful managers in the club’s history. Under his leadership, City has not only secured six Premier League titles, further cementing their domestic dominance, but has also achieved the remarkable feat of winning their inaugural Champions League trophy, a triumph that solidified his legacy in European football.
Having enjoyed remarkable stints at both Barcelona and Bayern Munich, Guardiola now faces the final stretch of his current contract with Manchester City, which will conclude at the end of this season. With his legacy firmly established, many are speculating on whether he will choose to extend his tenure or pursue new challenges beyond this campaign.
Speculation has been rife that Guardiola’s reign at Manchester City may soon be over, particularly in light of the ongoing investigation into the club’s alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial regulations. With 115 charges hanging over City, the uncertainty surrounding the outcome of this case has led many to question whether the club’s future, and Guardiola’s role in it, is secure.
Txiki Begiristain, who has been a pivotal figure in Manchester City’s rise to prominence alongside Guardiola, has officially confirmed that the coach will part ways with the club at the end of this season. As a close ally of Guardiola, Begiristain’s announcement highlights the personal and professional impact of this decision on the club’s leadership and direction.
The Athletic has confirmed that the 53-year-old coach is expected to sign a one-year extension to his existing contract, with the arrangement offering an option for an additional year, providing flexibility based on future developments.
Guardiola also signed his two previous contract extensions at City during the November international break.

The English champions return to action on Saturday, looking to snap an unprecedented losing streak for their manager.
Guardiola has lost four consecutive games for the first time in his coaching career.
Hit by the loss of Ballon d’Or winner Rodri to a season-ending knee injury, City have fallen five points behind Liverpool at the top of the Premier League after defeats to Bournemouth and Brighton.
They also lost 4-1 to Sporting Lisbon in their last Champions League outing and were eliminated from the League Cup by Tottenham.
But the retention of one the most decorated coaches in football history would be a massive boost to the morale of City players and fans.
Over the course of his eight full seasons at Manchester City, Guardiola has accumulated an impressive total of 15 major trophies, which include not only two FA Cups and four League Cups but also one Club World Cup and one UEFA Super Cup.
