Listen to article

The organised labour in Cross River State has postponed the planned industrial action scheduled to commence on Wednesday after the breakdown of negotiations between the unions and the state government.

The state chairman of the Trade Union Congress, TUC, Mr Monday Ogbodum, disclosed this in Calabar on Tuesday.

Ogbodum said that the decision for the warning strike was arrived at following the meeting of various organs of organised labour in the state on Tuesday.

He, however, said that the government had again invited labour to reconvene on Thursday after they staged a walkout from the meeting of the Joint Public Service Negotiating and Implementation Committee on the new minimum wage on Monday.

According to him: “We have just concluded our meetings and our agreement is that we will shelve the planned strike for Wednesday for a warning strike that will take place on Monday and Tuesday.

“As for Thursday meeting, we will attend and if they are still not bringing anything concrete to the table by Thursday, we will have no option but to embark on the national strike slated for December 1. But the warning strike will definitely take place on Monday and Tuesday.”

The Eastern Updates recalls that the labour unions had attributed government inaction towards implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage as the reason for their walkout.

In other news, the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC has reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for workers in Rivers State.

Joe Ajaero, the NLC National President, made the statement during the NLC National Executive Council meeting in Rivers State on Friday.

Ajaero also warned that the NLC would not stand by while workers suffer in the state.

He assured that the NLC would vigorously oppose any actions that might interfere with the payment of workers’ salaries in Rivers State.

The NLC president urged the judiciary to avoid actions that could lead to self-destruction, warning against decisions that could destabilize the state.
