CAN Disputes Alleged Church Tax Remarks On Otti

Listen to article

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Abia State has publicly disavowed any statement purportedly issued against Governor Alex Otti concerning a proposed tax on churches.

CAN representatives clarified that the association had not sanctioned any comments on the matter, describing the circulating information as baseless.

According to a weekend statement by CAN’s Abia State Chairman, Rev. Ojo Uduma, and Secretary, Rev. Dr. Francis E. Okere, the Christian Association of Nigeria did not authorize any letter submission to Sahara Reporters or allow any individual to speak on its behalf. The statement called for caution against misinformation and stressed that no official communication had been made regarding the recent reports.

It is important to note that an online news channel reported last week that the Abia chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria had urged Governor Otti to cease what they termed as “taxing God.” This statement referred to the state signage law that requires churches to pay fees for signposts or billboards displayed outside their premises.

The statement reads, “This is to bring to the notice of the general public that Christian Association of Nigeria Abia State chapter did NOT send any letter to Sahara Reporters for publication and never authorized anybody or group of persons to make any publication on our behalf.

“We therefore demand that the said article published on Sahara Reporters online portal on October 22, 2024 with the caption ‘Christian Association of Nigeria kicks as Governor Otti imposes signpost tax on Abia churches’ be retracted immediately and an apology letter should be written and sent to the Abia State chapter of CAN through Sahara Reporters online channel within 72 hours of this publication, else we shall be left with no other option than to direct our lawyers to institute legal procedures (defamation of character) against Sahara Reporters.

Abia State CAN stated that it distances itself from any correspondence, whether published or online, effective immediately.
