The BRICS alliance has formally invited 13 nations to join its partnership network, an expansion strategy revealed at the Kazan summit in Russia, which ran from October 22 to 24, 2024.
Though these nations are not granted full membership, their new status as partners reflects BRICS’ focus on deepening its connections with emerging economies worldwide.
The countries represented in this context are Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam, showcasing a broad spectrum of political and economic dynamics across different regions. The announcement signifies Nigeria’s official entry into BRICS as a partner country, a development that shines light on the nation’s growing influence in global economic discussions.
BRICS started as a coalition of Brazil, Russia, India, and China, but in 2010, it expanded to include South Africa, which points to the group’s dedication to fostering cooperation among major emerging markets.
The addition of Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates as full members has enriched the group, with each country participating fully in this year’s summit, highlighting their roles in regional and global affairs.
The organization’s objective is to cultivate trade, investment, development, security, and cooperation among prominent emerging market economies, aiming to foster a climate of mutual benefit and shared progress.

The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb Eche Abu-Obe, on Thursday, confirmed to The press that Nigeria is a partner in BRICS.
“Yes. It is true that Nigeria joined BRICS as a partner,” he said.
Nigeria’s inclusion as a partner country aligns with previous statements in November 2023 by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, who expressed the country’s intention to join BRICS as a full member within the next two years, leveraging its large economy and population.
