APC Endangering Multi-Party Democracy, Says PDP’s Sowunmi

Listen to article

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain Segun Sowunmi has issued a stern warning about the potential fallout from the ongoing tension between Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

In Sowunmi’s view, the lingering discord poses a direct threat to Nigeria’s political pluralism, as it could inadvertently empower the All Progressives Congress (APC) to monopolize the political arena.

He stressed that the unresolved feud between the two PDP heavyweights risks pushing Nigeria toward a one-party system, which could undermine the fundamental democratic principles the nation is built upon.

Appearing on Politics Today, Segun Sowunmi stressed the critical importance of mediation in preserving Nigeria’s democratic values. He warned that without proactive efforts to resolve the ongoing tensions, the country could face increased political instability and a weakening of its democratic framework.

“With due respect, the APC needs to reflect on whether it is functioning as a genuine political party, even though it is in government,” Sowunmi remarked.

Sowunmi also turned his attention to the escalating friction between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and former Governor Nyesom Wike, urging immediate mediation to defuse the situation before it escalates into broader political instability.

He further emphasized that finding a resolution to the ongoing strife is vital to maintaining Nigeria’s democracy, warning that failure to do so could lead to significant disruptions in the political system.

“There is a risk of this democracy morphing into a one-party state if the necessary mediation isn’t applied to the Wike-Fubara feud,” Sowunmi stated.

He added, “The PDP has just conducted congresses all over the country; I can’t recall when our rivals, the APC, even mentioned anything about such a thing. We’re striving to uphold the principles of democracy; it’s not a graveyard peace—people will have opinions and will go to court. The APC must be deceiving itself if it thinks it is a political party. It might be in government or be a special-purpose vehicle for contesting elections, but it would be laughable for them to look at themselves and see how one person wakes up in the morning, throws away the chairman, and they conduct a congress. Someone emerges, and then the next day, they order that the election be redone.”
