Some Government Officials Should Be Imprisoned – Obasanjo

Olusegun Obasanjo, a former Nigerian President, has openly reiterated that some of the people currently in government should be nabbed and detained for their past misdemeanours and criminal misconduct.

Obasanjo made this statement on Thursday while speaking virtually at the memorial lecture of Denis Joseph Slattery in Lagos.

According to him, government officials with “questionable” integrity cannot make good decisions that will benefit Nigerians.

In his speech titled “The Imperative for Moral Rectitude in Governance,” Obasanjo pointed out that the most important demand of anybody involved in governance at any level is “accountability.”

He said: “If you look clinically at the people in government today at both executive and legislative levels, some of them should be permanently behind bars for their past misdemeanour and criminal misconduct. You cannot expect thieves to give good judgement in favour of the owner of the property.”

In another news, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the ruling APC, refuted the accusation that he was involved in a fresh conspiracy to oust the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, calling the claims completely unfounded during a statement made on Thursday.

This statement follows a surge of activity on social media, where a viral post accused Ganduje of orchestrating a new scheme to dethrone Emir Muhammad Sanusi, captioned, “Ganduje leads fresh plot to dethrone Emir Muhammad Sanusi.”

Emir Sanusi was reinstated in May, roughly four years after he was deposed while Ganduje served as the governor of Kano State. His dethronement received judicial endorsement, a decision that many critics argue was heavily influenced by the Ganduje-led government.

On Thursday, Ganduje released a statement in Abuja, disavowing any claims linking him to a new initiative aimed at dethroning Sanusi. He called the allegations “lame” and emphasized that, as a former governor, he has no capacity to carry out such a move against the Emir.
