Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State says he has no misgivings about describing the Saturday governorship poll as a “do or die” contest, maintaining that his choice of words reflects the seriousness of the situation.
A storm of criticism has erupted against the governor, particularly from opposition members, who have strongly opposed his comments from earlier in the week.
Obaseki, in an interview on Politics Today aired on Channels Television Thursday, insisted that the stakes are dire, describing the election as a “do or die” situation, claiming that an APC victory would spell disaster for the people of Edo.
“It’s a do or die affair because if they do, we die, the level of impunity, the level of recklessness we see in the opposition party, if they take over Edo state, finished – that is the end,” Obaseki said.
He asserted that the opposition party has crafted a strategy to tilt the outcome of Saturday’s election in their favor, but stressed that the people of Edo State would not allow it to happen.
Obaseki didn’t hide his disillusionment with the police, claiming their partiality has cast a shadow of doubt over their ability to ensure a fair election, a sentiment that raises the stakes for the weekend’s vote.

“If you see the evidence of what they have done, the blatant way they have gone about it. it is like they forget that the police are being funded by taxpayers’ money, Nigerians taxpayers’ money. They should just be a bit more professional and unbiased,” he said.
According to Governor Wike, the opposition is using intimidation as a last-ditch effort because they know the PDP will trounce them. He stated that the APC has no meaningful message to win over the electorate in Edo.
