The Anambra State Government has indefinitely slammed an immediate ban on the activities of scavengers who move about buying iron scraps, commonly referred to as “iron condemn”.
This choice comes after the infamous actions of the scavengers, which have posed a major inconvenience to society. These actions include stealing metal items from public facilities and private properties, as well as damaging essential infrastructure.

According to a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Paul Nwosu, the scavengers’ actions have had a detrimental impact on the state’s economy and the country as a whole.
Individuals who are found conducting business with these scavengers have been cautioned by the government that they will be apprehended and charged with receiving stolen property.
The Ministry of Environment plans to register and certify legitimate scrap metal dealers to differentiate them from illegal condemned iron scavengers. This will enable certified dealers to conduct their business without facing obstacles.
The OCHA and SASA brigades have been tasked with enforcing the ban and apprehending any condemned iron scavengers found operating within the state.
Citizens should promptly report any scavenger activities to the authorities.
This move is seen as a significant step towards maintaining law and order in the state and protecting public and private properties from theft and vandalism.
