DSS Recalibrates Media Strategy, Fine-Tunes Secret Operation

Listen to article

Director General Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi has signaled a new direction for the Department of State Services (DSS), one that favors targeted, behind-the-scenes efforts to gather intelligence and enhance national security over high-profile media operations.

Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, who took the reins of the Department of State Services just a week ago, following his appointment by President Bola Tinubu on August 26, emphasized the need for the agency to refocus on its core strengths – covert operations – during a press conference on Wednesday. He stressed that a more subdued approach would ultimately bolster national security.

Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi emphasized his dedication to promoting a culture of professionalism and excellence, ensuring the Department of State Services is well-equipped to navigate the nation’s increasingly complex security challenges with precision and effectiveness.

In a move seemingly aligned with the new Director General’s vision, Dr. Peter Afunanya, the erstwhile head of Public Relations and Strategic Communications at the Department of State Services, has been reassigned to a new role, although details of his new posting remain undisclosed.

The position of Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications at the Department of State Services remains unfilled, with no official word on who will succeed Dr. Peter Afunanya.

However, Dr. Afunanya told journalists at the press briefing at the headquarters of the DSS on Wednesday that the agency was determined to keep Nigerians informed with accurate and relevant information whenever the need arises.

“What this means is that the DSS will continue to relate and engage with Nigerians through the media whenever the need arises. It does not mean that we want to operate in the dark or hide the truth from them,” Afunayna explained.

“We will continue to engage with the Nigerian people whenever the need arises. But we want to stick to our core mandate of covert operation to promote national security and safety of Nigerians,” the outgoing PRO said.
