Anambra State is poised for a democratic rebirth, as Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration has committed to holding local government elections, ending a decade-long drought.

This landmark move aims to restore the voice of the people, foster inclusive governance, and usher in a new era of grassroots participation.

The decision to hold local government polls in Anambra State represents a hard-won victory for the state’s civil society, politicians, and media, who have been vocal in their demands for Governor Chukwuma Soludo to make good on his campaign promise.

After years of persistent advocacy, the governor’s administration has finally relented, paving the way for democratic governance at the local level.

Anambra State’s local government landscape has remained stagnant for over a decade, with the last election held in 2013, during the waning days of former Governor Peter Obi’s tenure. In a move that underscores its commitment to democratic governance, the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) has announced plans to conduct local government polls in Anambra State.

The announcement, made in a press statement on Monday, follows the inauguration of the Commission’s members last week, and is accompanied by a charge to ensure a transparent, free, and fair electoral process.

Genevieve Osakwe, Chairman of Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) in a statement on Monday, said the election would hold on Sept. 28.

She said, ‘The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission wishes to inform all registered Political Parties and the general public that Local Government Elections in the State will be held on Saturday September 28, 2024.

The Congress witnessed the election of 18 Chapter Officers in each of the 31 Local Governments, resulting in a total of 558 officers. Moreover, each LGA elected one National Delegate, bringing the total to 31, and one Person Living with Disabilities (PLWD), totaling 31 PLWD representatives statewide.

At the Local Government Congress held at the PDP chapter headquarters in Nsit Ubium, Governor Umo Eno was elected as a National Delegate, alongside other prominent party members. This election highlights Governor Eno’s growing influence within the Party and his role in shaping its future.

Governor Umo Eno, the PDP’s state leader, lauded the party’s members for their unwavering unity and unshakeable commitment to victory, traits that have become synonymous with the PDP’s identity in the state.

In his address to stakeholders and returning officers before their deployment to various LGAs, Aniekan Akpan, the Ibom State PDP Chairman, emphasized the importance of electing officers who are willing to make sacrifices and demonstrate stewardship, thereby attracting more loyal supporters to the PDP in Akwa Ibom State.
