Shehu Sani, a former senator and vocal critic, has denounced the violent clashes that erupted during protests in northern Nigeria. He believes the mayhem is a smokescreen for a more nefarious agenda – to topple the government and install a new order, raising concerns about the nation’s fragile democracy.
Appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today, former Senator Shehu Sani dropped a bombshell, alleging that as the protests gained momentum, a clandestine operation was underway in the North.
He claimed that youths in the region were mysteriously handed cash and foreign flags, fueling suspicions of external manipulation.
“A day before the last protest, money was shared to the youths, and Russian flags were also shared. That shows that the whole intent of the protest is not simply about the policies and programmes of the government,” he said.
“There was an attempt to create an atmosphere where there would be an overthrow of the government. When you have this kind of situation, you will see that someone is writing a script for anarchy, lawlessness, and disorder. It is incumbent for someone like us to speak.”

A 10-day crusade against bad governance kicked off on August 1, as protesters took to the streets to demand a U-turn on unpopular government policies. The #EndBadGovernance movement is gaining momentum, with demonstrators vowing to keep up the pressure until their voices are heard.
