Listen to article

In a televised address on Sunday morning, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu weighed in on the widespread demonstrations gripping the nation, but his words have sparked a mixed bag of reactions from Nigerians.

While some have praised his efforts to acknowledge the people’s plight, many others have dismissed his statements as vague and unconvincing, leaving the public craving more tangible solutions to the country’s pressing issues.

The protests, which erupted on August 1 and are slated to continue for 10 days, have taken a dark turn, with violent clashes and tragic loss of life reported in various parts of the country. The escalating unrest has raised concerns about the safety of citizens and the ability of authorities to maintain order.

In a timely intervention, former military president General Ibrahim Babangida injected a dose of patriotism into the national discourse, declaring that Nigeria’s democracy has become an irreversible reality. He urged all citizens to rally behind the democratic process and work tirelessly to protect it.

Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka has cautioned security forces to exercise restraint and strategic thinking in their response to the protests, warning that heavy-handed tactics could lead to unnecessary loss of life and further inflame tensions.

Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State and the Edo State Government have praised the peaceful nature of the protests in their respective states, while also emphasizing their belief that dialogue remains the most effective means of resolving grievances and addressing concerns.

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, Minister of Works Dave Umahi, and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma have commended the residents of the South-east for their wisdom in shunning the protests, acknowledging their role in maintaining harmony and order in the zone.

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has commended President Tinubu for his recent address, while also calling on protesters and organizers to halt further demonstrations and engage in constructive dialogue to resolve outstanding issues.

Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President, has taken aim at President Tinubu’s address, describing it as a missed opportunity to tackle the root causes of the protests, namely widespread poverty and hardship, and instead delivering a speech that lacked substance and depth.

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has echoed the sentiments of its 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, by condemning President Tinubu’s speech as a stark reminder of the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration’s callous disregard for the welfare of Nigerians and the nation’s dire circumstances.
