Tragedy struck in Ebonyi State‘s Edda Local Government Area when a brazen assault on a military checkpoint along the Amangwu stretch of the Amasiri-Owutu road claimed the lives of two individuals, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake.

A firsthand account from an eyewitness describes the attack as a swift and ruthless operation, with gunmen on a motorcycle swooping in during the pre-dawn hours of Friday to wreak havoc.

The eyewitness recounted a harrowing scene, detailing how a fierce gun battle erupted between the attackers and security forces, resulting in the deaths of a soldier and one of the assailants, and sending waves of panic and fear through the local community, motorists, and commuters using the road.

The eyewitness further revealed that the aftermath of the attack saw commuters facing an agonizing wait, forced to spend hours in limbo before the situation was brought under control and they could finally continue their journeys.

At the time of this report’s filing, DSP Joshua Ukandu, the Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, said he had not received any information or updates from the Owutu Police Division regarding the attack, and therefore could not provide any additional details.

In a related development,  Anambra state have vowed to keep their markets open, resisting the call for shutdowns amid the #EndBadGovernance protests spreading across the country.

Onitsha and Nnewi, the economic lifelines of Anambra state, are thriving, with filling stations, banks, and motor transport services open for business, and the local population going about their daily lives with minimal disruption.

To quell the apprehensions and uncertainty among traders and customers, Chief Innocent Ezeoha, Chairman of Onitsha Main Market, has made it clear that the Igbo people are not participating in the protests, providing a sense of relief and stability.
