Listen to article

As part of its commitment to national security, the NSCDC Enugu State Command has activated a heightened state of alertness among its ranks, tasking its personnel with the pivotal role of protecting the region’s vital infrastructure and assets from sabotage, vandalism, or other malicious activities.

The clarion call to vigilance was sounded on Monday, as Commander Cyprian Otoibhi, the state Commandant of the NSCDC, issued a statement from Enugu, which was promptly shared with members of the press, outlining the directive to safeguard critical national assets and infrastructure.

The NSCDC Commandant explained that the directive was issued in anticipation of the planned nationwide protest on August 1, which has necessitated extra precautions to ensure the protection of vital assets and infrastructure from potential vandalism or sabotage.

Commander Otoibhi elaborated that the directive underscores the need for anticipatory actions to preclude any potential descent into chaos and ensure a unified response to emerging security threats, thereby maintaining public safety and order.

“To this end, the command has ordered the deployment of patrol teams and intelligence officers in all the nooks and crannies of the state.

“This is aimed at maintaining vigilance, gathering real-time intelligence and ensuring rapid response to any security threats.

“I have also directed that Area Commanders and Divisional Officers as well as supervisory officers maintain the highest level of vigilance and take full responsibility for the security of assets within their jurisdictions.

“I passionately appeal to the protest organisers to consider seeking alternative lawful methods to express their grievances,” the statement added.

Otoibhi cautioned against the involvement of miscreants, hoodlums and other disruptive elements, “whose contribution to the protest would be counterproductive.

“I am assuring the good citizens of the state that all necessary and lawful measures will be employed to maintain peace and order toward ensuring a safe and secure environment for all law-abiding citizens,” he added.
