Saturday afternoon turned treacherous for two or more people traveling in a sports utility vehicle, as they fell prey to a group of armed kidnappers, who sped off with them in a shocking turn of events.
Investigations have revealed that the alarming incident occurred in the densely populated Ifite area of Awka, mere yards away from the Nnamdi Azikiwe University’s rear entrance, a location familiar to students and faculty alike.
Residents of Awka, the capital city of Anambra State, are sounding the alarm over the rapid decline in security, as a sense of vulnerability and fear takes hold in the once-tranquil community.
A gruesome series of events gripped the city last week, as three people accused of cult involvement were fatally attacked on Sunday, and a fourth person fell victim to the unrelenting violence on Monday, sparking widespread concern.
A disturbing video footage emerged, revealing the harrowing scene on Saturday where a group of hooded gunmen, their faces obscured, stormed a vehicle, ordering its occupants to exit and board their black Sienna, leaving onlookers aghast.
A source in the area where the incident happened said the men shot into the air as they made away with the victims, while one of them also took the victims’ car.

Lawrence Ibemesi, a resident of Awka, said: “We don’t know what is happening in Awka any longer. Security people need to sit up because we can no longer understand these killings and kidnappings here and there.”
When press the reached the Anambra State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, he said: “We are studying the video and also liaising with anyone who is an eyewitness to go after the kidnappers. We have also alerted our strategic teams at major flashpoints to be on the lookout.”
On what the command is doing with the increasing insecurity and recent cult-related killings, Ikenga insisted the command was not aware of any recent cult killings in the state capital. He rather insisted that this reporter should come to him with proof.
