Contrary to speculations of foul play which resulted in the death of a lady clubber, late Miss Chinyere Awuda, Anambra authorities has maintained it stance that the deceased was drowned in a hotel swimming pool.

DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson of Anambra State Police Command, released a press statement citing the findings of an autopsy report, which conclusively states that the young lady, unfortunately, drowned.

Awuda’s death has evoked widespread outcry, as it was reported that she went to Cosmila Hotel in Awka to enjoy a night out clubbing.

Unfortunately, she became involved in an accusation of theft, where she was alleged to have pocketed money that was being sprayed on a celebrant. The situation allegedly escalated, leading to her being fatally beaten and subsequently discarded in an abandoned swimming pool.

The hotel management, in their account, said that Awuda was involved in the theft of money from the club premises and attempted to escape, taking shelter in a poorly illuminated area. Unfortunately, she fell into the unused swimming pool by mistake, resulting in her drowning.

But police in a press release on Friday said: ‘In the course of the Police investigation, the celebrant was arrested for questioning while the corpse was recovered and deposited at the morgue for autopsy.’

‘Contrary to claims that the deceased was beaten to death, the pathologist found no sign of trauma on the body. The autopsy report indicated that drowning was the cause of death.’

‘This finding was in tandem with claims that the lady ran away when accosted and every effort made to find her that night was futile. It would appear that she fell into the abandoned swimming pool and drowned,’ police disclosed.

DSP Tochukwu Ikenga stated that the Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye, has instructed the submission of the pathologist’s report to the Attorney General for examination and legal counsel.
