The Abia State House of Assembly’s Speaker, Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, has taken the decision to suspend Chief Solomon Akpulonu, the member representing Obingwa East state constituency.

The suspension was in response to Akpulonu’s granting of media interviews on Assembly matters.

Chief Solomon Akpulonu, the former majority leader of the Abia State House of Assembly, has been subjected to a 14-sitting-day suspension by the Speaker, Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa.

The Eastern Updates Gathered that the Abia State House of Assembly is facing internal turmoil after the Speaker appointed Hon. Uchenna Okoro, a representative of the minority Labour Party, as the majority leader.

The breakdown of seats in the state assembly is as follows: PDP holds 11 seats, LP secured 10 seats, YPP won 2 seats, and APC obtained 1 seat.

The PDP lawmakers, under Akpulonu’s leadership, have been consistently staging walkouts during sittings, asserting their claim as the majority party entitled to the majority positions.

The Speaker faced continued pressure from the PDP lawmakers to read the letter submitted by their party leadership, which nominated their members for the majority leadership positions.

The Speaker took to the House floor to announce Akpulonu’s suspension, emphasizing that the Assembly would not condone acts of insubordination and pointed out his alleged role in inciting members against the leadership.

The Speaker expressed his disapproval of the lawmaker’s actions, stating that granting press interviews and revealing the House’s activities without clearance from the leadership were against the House’s protocols.

He said; ‘Hon. Solomon Akpulonu has been causing chaos in the Assembly since its inauguration. He has been tolerated for too long. As lawmakers, it is normal to disagree as long as it is done with decorum and within the confines of the law.’

The Speaker made it clear that the suspension notification would be dispatched to Akpulonu, who was noticeably absent from the proceedings.
