Abia Government Grieves The Loss Of Prof Joe Irukwu

The Abia State Government has communicated its heartfelt condolences following the demise of Professor Joe Irukwu, former President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

The sad news of Professor Irukwu’s passing was confirmed by his son, Pastor Agu Irukwu, who announced that the esteemed professor passed away on Sunday at the age of 89.

Governor Alex Otti, through his Chief Press Secretary, Kazie Uko, expressed his deep grief over the passing of Professor Joe Irukwu, noting that it is a significant loss to the state.

The late Professor Joe Irukwu, born in Item Okpi, Bende Local Government Area, Abia State, has left behind a legacy of excellence and service.

The statement read: ‘Governor Otti, on behalf of his family and people of Abia State, commiserate with the family, immediate community (Amokwe Item), the entire people of Item Okpi and Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide on the loss of this illustrious son of Abia State and Nigerian statesman.’

Otti reflected on ‘the giant strides and indelible footprints that Prof Irukwu left behind in the insurance sector, among which are his record as the pioneer Managing Director of Nigeria Reinsurance Corporation and founder of African Development Insurance Company.’

‘These and other accomplishments as a consummate lawyer, lecturer and author of several books on insurance earned Prof Irukwu the sobriquet, ‘Mr. Insurance’, according to the Governor,’ the statement further stated.

Governor Otti expresses gratitude to God for the privilege of having a remarkable individual like Professor Irukwu in Abia State and encourages the family to find solace in his enduring legacy.

Offering prayers for the eternal rest of Professor Irukwu, Governor Otti pays tribute to his leadership as the former head of Ohanaeze. He assures the family and other Southeast states of Abia’s commitment to working harmoniously to ensure a dignified and memorable burial for the esteemed insurance icon.
