Sit-At-Home: Anambra Bans School Closure, Warns Of Sanctions

Listen to article

The Anambra State Government has officially ended the long-standing Monday sit-at-home directive, issuing an executive order that requires schools and offices to remain open at the start of each week. The move comes after a state executive council retreat on January 21, 2026, presided over by Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo.

A letter dated January 22 and signed by Loveline Mgbemena, Board Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Board, directed all permanent board members, local government officers, zonal directors, and departmental heads to communicate the order to staff and ensure strict compliance.

The directive makes clear that any teacher or non-tutorial staff who fails to attend school or office on Mondays will face salary penalties, receiving either 20 percent of their pay or forfeiting it entirely. The letter, titled “Executive Order on Termination of Monday Sit-at-Home in Anambra State,” underscores that the decision is binding and immediate.

The Monday sit-at-home practice traces back to August 9, 2021, when the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) instructed residents to stay home weekly until its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, was released from prison. Although IPOB has formally abolished the directive, many residents continued to observe it due to security concerns.

Governor Soludo’s order seeks to normalize work and learning routines, signaling a firm stance against disruptions that have affected education and public service operations in the state.
