Authorities are investigating the reported suicide of Dr. Ikenna Erinne, a 36-year-old Nigerian cardiologist residing in the U.S., who allegedly took his own life after an unfavorable verdict in a child support dispute with his unidentified ex-wife.
The unfortunate incident is said to have taken place on Sunday, January 26. Dr. Ikenna Erinne, a U.S.-based Nigerian from Anambra State, had allegedly been embroiled in a prolonged divorce dispute with his estranged wife, which also extended to child custody disagreements.
Dr. Ikenna Erinne lost the case after a U.S. court ruled in favor of his former wife, mandating him to pay $15,000 in child support each month. The ruling reportedly placed an immense financial burden on him. Reacting to the news on X.com, Nigerian-American Clayton Udo confirmed the incident, noting that the court’s decision had a profound impact, contributing to Erinne’s untimely death.
He wrote, “The abuse of African men in the USA must come to an end. In a deeply troubling case, Dr. Ikenna Erinne, an American-trained cardiologist, allegedly took his own life after an American court ordered him to pay his ex-wife $15,000 monthly, following a prolonged and contentious divorce case. This tragic incident highlights the systemic issues within the legal system that disproportionately affect African men.”

Udo, identifying as a specialist in psychological and mental abuse, stated that Dr. Ikenna Erinne had already exhausted thousands of dollars on legal fees before the court’s verdict favored his ex-wife. The ruling, he added, also led to the revocation of Erinne’s medical license. Overwhelmed by his losses, the doctor reportedly shot himself.
“He shot himself to death. He spent thousands of dollars in legal fees – wasted money. I am talking about a process that impoverishes you. You go to court and they take all your money.
“He lost his license as a cardiologist in this case plus they slammed on him 15,000 dollars a month plus restricted access to his children,” he added.
In a Facebook tribute, Obim Onujiogu—another Nigerian living in the United States—confirmed Dr. Ikenna Erinne’s passing. Describing him as both a dedicated medical professional and a loving family man, Onujiogu mourned the tragic loss. He also announced that Erinne’s funeral will take place on Monday in Maryland.
Onujiogu wrote, “In Loving Memory of Dr. Ikenna C. Erinne. It is with heavy hearts that the ASA DC family announces the sudden and untimely passing of Dr. Ikenna Erinne Dr. Ikenna C. Erinne, was a beloved father, son, brother, and esteemed cardiologist, who departed on January 26, 2025.
