Newly appointed coach of the Super Eagles, Eric Chelle, made an emphatic promise on Monday, vowing that his team would deliver the goals necessary to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup. This commitment comes after Nigeria’s disappointing absence from the previous edition of the tournament and a less-than-ideal start to the current qualification campaign.

The 47-year-old coach has officially put pen to paper on a two-year contract, with his primary mandate being to lead the Super Eagles to qualification for the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico. This contract solidifies his commitment to a goal-driven tenure, where success will be measured by the team’s ability to secure a place in the prestigious tournament.

At his formal introduction in Abuja, Chelle expressed confidence that his team would play a high-energy, attacking style of football, with the sole purpose of ensuring Nigeria’s qualification for next year’s World Cup. His statement emphasizes a commitment to attacking football as the key to unlocking the team’s full potential and securing a place in the global competition.

“I have always had a love for scoring goals. My teams are never short of goals, and I promise the Super Eagles will be no different,” Chelle said.

“Football is about scoring goals and I favour an attacking style.

“I know the expectations of Nigerians and I will settle down and work diligently with assistants towards the goal of qualifying the Super Eagles to the 2026 World Cup.”

With just three points from their opening four matches, Nigeria finds themselves second from the bottom in their World Cup qualification group. The standings are close, as Rwanda tops the group on goal difference, followed by South Africa and Benin, who are also on seven points, intensifying the competition for a qualification spot as the group heads into the next round of fixtures.

The group winners are guaranteed automatic qualification to the World Cup.

In March, Nigeria will fly out to Rwanda before a home game against bottom-team Zimbabwe.

“Coaching the Super Eagles of Nigeria is an amazing job,” said former Lens captain Chelle.

“I do not take this appointment for granted.

“I am elated and will do my utmost best.”

Chelle was previously coach of Mali, who he guided to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, as well as Algerian club MC Oran.
