Tinubu Unapologetic About Fuel Subsidy Removal

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, speaking on Monday during his inaugural presidential media chat, doubled down on his decision to abolish the fuel subsidy. He asserted that the move, though controversial, was necessary for the economic recalibration of the country and declared he had no regrets about implementing it.

Highlighting the broader implications, the President argued that subsidizing fuel was no longer viable, pointing to its significant economic toll both within Nigeria and across the region.

“I don’t have any regrets removing fuel subsidy,” the President stated.

“We can’t be subsidizing the entire West Africa sub region. Either we slice it in half or bits, we still have to completely remove it.”

Tinubu drew attention to the advancements in security, stating that previously hazardous routes were now safer, a testament to the government’s commitment to restoring peace and mobility.

“Two decades of wanton killings have been addressed. Today, you can travel the roads. Before now, it was impossible,” he said, adding that the military remains vigilant against both internal and external threats to ensure the safety of citizens.

In a discussion on fiscal management, the President proudly outlined the administration’s departure from the previous “ways and means” framework, underscoring that the government now functions with enhanced financial oversight and discipline. “We are seeing more revenue being generated and properly distributed,” Tinubu stated.

The President highlighted the autonomy granted to local governments as a crucial step forward, linking it to his unwavering commitment to grassroots empowerment. Reflecting on his time as Lagos State Governor, he recounted his battles with the Obasanjo administration over the creation of more local councils, which he said laid the groundwork for this important achievement.

Tinubu acknowledged ongoing challenges but expressed optimism about the country’s progress.

“I am preparing for an early presidential election,” she told French newspaper Le Parisien last week.
