Trump Threatens 25% Tariffs On Mexico, Canada, 10% On China

In a string of posts on his Truth Social account, former President Donald Trump pledged to impose broad tariffs on all imports from some of the United States’ biggest trading partners. He argued that this move would protect American industries and reshape global trade relations, though the implications of such a policy remain a point of debate.

In a follow-up post shortly thereafter, the former and potential future president declared that he would impose a 10 percent tariff on all Chinese products entering the United States. This new tariff, he added, would be “above any additional tariffs,” and was a direct response to China’s inability to address the growing issue of fentanyl smuggling.

“On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders,” he wrote.

As a key element of Trump’s economic vision, tariffs featured prominently during his campaign, with the Republican president-elect vowing to impose extensive duties on a wide range of countries—both allies and adversaries. This bold stance played a pivotal role in his victory on November 5th, as it resonated strongly with his supporters.

Experts in economics have consistently raised concerns that tariffs could stifle economic growth and lead to higher inflation. Since importers are the ones who bear the direct cost of these duties, they often transfer the financial burden to consumers, making goods more expensive for everyday Americans.

While critics raise alarms, Trump’s inner circle has insisted that the tariffs function as a powerful bargaining tool. By imposing these duties, they argue, the U.S. can press its trading partners to secure more favorable terms and incentivize the return of manufacturing jobs from abroad.
