A driver, whose name is yet to be revealed, had a miraculous escape from death yesterday when a 40-foot, fully loaded container crashed onto his Toyota Camry, marked with the registration number LSR 293 HJ. The accident took place at Mile 2, on the way to Apapa Ports, Lagos, and could have resulted in a far worse tragedy.

Thankfully, the driver of the vehicle was rescued due to the swift and coordinated efforts of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other emergency responders, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA). Their timely intervention prevented a potentially fatal outcome.

According to an eyewitness account, the accident took place at about 8 a.m., just as the city’s morning activities were picking up pace.

The victim was rushed to the hospital by the coordinated efforts of the rescue team, where they received immediate medical treatment to stabilize their condition.

Throughout the operation, officers from the Kirikiri Police Division played a vital role in maintaining security, ensuring that the scene remained safe and organized for the emergency responders to carry out their duties without disruption.

Following the rescue, the Toyota Camry was successfully removed from beneath the container. The debris was later evacuated to ease congestion, while LASTMA officers restored normalcy.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, however, reiterated the critical importance of proper container securing by truck drivers and owners.

He stressed that negligence in this regard endangers lives and property, urging strict compliance with road safety protocols to avert such catastrophic occurrences.

“LASTMA remains unwavering in its commitment to ensuring the safety and efficiency of Lagos roadways and continues to work collaboratively with relevant stakeholders to uphold traffic laws and enhance public safety,” Bakare-Oki stated.
