The statement read, “On 22/11/2024, at about 0843 hrs, the Borno State Police Command received a distress call about some unidentified objects/items suspected to be explosive ordnance seen clustered near an uncompleted building in Dala-Abuja Talakawa Area, Maiduguri.
“The Command EOD-CBRN Base 13 Maiduguri swiftly moved to the scene where 6 projectiles and 1 unexploded mortar bomb were recovered to a safer ground.”
On the same day, the command reportedly received another distress call from Gwange Area that an unidentified object was washed ashore in Gwange river bank.
“The Command EOD-CRRN Base 13 Maiduguri quickly swung into action, swept the area, and recovered one unexploded Hand Grenade (UXO’s),” the statement added.
Preliminary investigations were said to have revealed that the ordnance was washed ashore due to the recent devastating flood incident in the state.
In the statement, the Borno State Commissioner of Police, CP Yusufu Lawal, reassured residents of the command’s commitment to ensuring public safety and security.
Recall that it was reported in September that around one million people were affected by the devastating flood in Maiduguri, with at least 414,000 people displaced and 30 killed.
In other news, The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed a thorough inquiry into allegations of misconduct and abuse of authority leveled against officers of the Imo State Police Command. This move stresses his commitment to accountability and restoring public trust in the force by addressing grievances against law enforcement personnel.
This development came in response to a formal complaint lodged by Anthony Osayande, a car dealer based in Edo State, who alleged that a team of policemen led by John Ebute unlawfully stormed his car dealership. According to Osayande, the officers forcibly seized five luxury vehicles and detained six of his employees during the operation.
Reports indicate that the alleged raid happened on October 17, 2024, coinciding with the period when Osayande was traveling for business, leaving the responsibility of the car stand in the hands of his staff.
