Spain’s First Lady Calls Graft Charges ‘Politically Motivated’

In her first public statement on the ongoing political controversy, Begona Gomez, the wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, vehemently rejected the corruption allegations leveled against her.

She described the accusations as politically driven, dismissing them as part of a broader attempt to destabilize her and her family’s reputation.

Following complaints from organizations with far-right affiliations, a judge has begun probing Begona Gomez for alleged involvement in corruption, influence peddling, and the misappropriation of funds. This legal investigation adds a significant dimension to the growing political debate.

Prior to her appearance before a commission in the Madrid regional parliament, which is controlled by conservative lawmakers, Begona Gomez had refrained from commenting on the matter. However, on Wednesday, she broke her silence, dismissing the ongoing investigations as nothing more than “fake news.”

“All this has a clear political goal, you only have to look at the list of complainants… the truth will put things in their place,” she said.

Sanchez, the Prime Minister, has steadfastly denied the validity of the accusations against his wife, stating that they are groundless. He has characterized them as a political tactic by the conservative and far-right opposition, aimed at undermining the stability of his left-wing government, which holds a precarious position in parliament.

Judge Juan Carlos Peinado’s decision to open an investigation against Gomez in April triggered a political crisis when Sanchez withdrew from official duties for five days and threatened to resign.

A Madrid court has summoned Gomez to testify on December 18 in the misappropriation case, which is related to her time working at the Spanish capital’s Complutense University.

The court postponed the original date of November 18 as Gomez is due to accompany Sanchez at a G20 summit in Brazil.
