Infants’ Bodies In Dump Spark Ivory Coast Investigation

Listen to article

Authorities in Abidjan, Ivory Coast’s largest city, have launched an investigation after the bodies of two infants, along with other human remains, were discovered at a landfill site. Officials confirmed that police are actively working to understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic find.

Abidjan’s police chief, Kollo Roger Yeo, stated that the bodies of two stillborn infants were found early Sunday morning at a landfill in Akouedo, to the east of the city. The site also contained medical equipment and fibroids, which Yeo suggested were likely discarded by a local clinic or hospital, sparking an investigation into the origin of the medical waste.

Siaka Dosso, the Deputy Director-General for Public Safety, confirmed that the site also contained human waste, including fibroids and umbilical cords. Dosso’s statement adds further insight into the troubling materials discovered alongside the bodies of the stillborn infants.

He noted that the police have initiated an official investigation to look into the source of the remains and medical waste, aiming to address any potential violations in disposal practices.

“Mothers sometimes abandon newborns and we find them, alive or dead,” said Dosso, adding that finding “human waste” was less common.

In 2022 the Ivorian government said it would close down illegal private clinics, as “more than 80 percent of establishments in the private sector do not meet current standards” according to Dosso.

Abortion is only legal in the West African country in the event of rape, incest, or when the mother’s life, mental or physical health is at risk.
