Listen to article

The government of Abia State has introduced a revised minimum wage for its civil servants, aiming to address inflation’s impact on workers’ purchasing power. The new wage policy is intended to offer relief to public sector employees, reaffirming the state’s dedication to supporting its workforce.

This decision comes after reaching an agreement with labor unions, setting a new standard where workers at Grade Level 1, Step 15 will now earn a monthly salary of N80,463. This adjustment is aimed at boosting entry-level wages and ensuring fair compensation across the board.

Finalized on Tuesday night following extended negotiations, this decision was officially announced at a ceremony at the Government House. Pastor Caleb Ajagba, Chief of Staff to Governor Alex Otti, represented the governor, underlining the administration’s commitment to fair compensation for public workers.

The updated salary structure is planned for rollout by October 2024, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to improve compensation for public workers.
