Jonathan Alerts Judiciary To Resist Political Influence

Listen to article

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has voiced his concerns regarding the escalating political crisis in Nigeria, attributing it largely to recent court rulings, which he characterized as “turning the cone of justice upside down.” His remarks highlight a growing unease among political leaders about the implications of judicial decisions on the nation’s stability.

At the celebration of Professor Mike Ozekhome’s 67th birthday and the launch of his 50-book collection, former President Goodluck Jonathan urged judges to remain steadfast and not be swayed by political maneuvers. His warning reflects a growing concern for the judiciary’s role in upholding justice amid a politically charged environment.

While co-chairing the gathering alongside former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Jonathan expressed concern over the turmoil caused by recent court judgments in political affairs. He specifically highlighted a controversial ruling that allowed a ward chairman to expel a national chairman of a political party, indicating that such decisions have contributed significantly to the nation’s instability.

He further appealed to the Supreme Court to reassess its earlier ruling, warning that these kinds of judicial decisions endanger the overall stability of the political system in Nigeria.

While offering his congratulations, Jonathan characterized Ozekhome as an extraordinary individual, equipped with exceptional talents and expertise that empower him to create a lasting impact.

Meanwhile, Obasanjo also hinted that he has a lot to say, but suggested that the time is not yet right to speak out fully.

In his remarks, he described Ozekhome as an extraordinary man and person who advocated thorough and social change with conviction.

A former chairman of the Body of Benchers (BOB), Wole Olanipekun, who reviewed the 50 books authored by Mike Ozekhome, described him as a political, legal scholar, human rights activist and political commentator whose views are expressed on diverse subjects.

Former presidential candidate of the labour party, Peter Obi urged Ozekhome not to relent in efforts to build a better society.
