Jigawa Tanker Explosion: 90 Dead Bodies Buried In Mass Grave

Some of the victims of the petrol tanker explosion in Majia Town of Jigawa State have been buried in a mass grave, The Eastern Updates reported on Wednesday.

Late Tuesday night, a tanker transporting petrol lost control and exploded, causing widespread destruction in Jigawa State.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Spokesperson, Shi’isu Adam, said the tanker driver was en route from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State when the accident happened near Khadija University in Majiya Town.

Adam explained that the tanker driver lost control of the vehicle at around 11:30pm resulting in a fatal explosion that engulfed many people at the scene.

However, an X user @ImranMuhdz posted a video of the grave of the deceased with the caption: “Mass burial of over 100 victims of the tanker explosion in Majia Town, Jigawa State.”

The tanker, he said, left Kano, on its way to Nguru town in Yobe State, when the tanker driver eventually lost control of the vehicle and it exploded.

It was gathered that after the incident some people went there to scope the product which led to the death of many persons.

It was also gathered that some injured persons have also been taken to Federal Medical Centre Birnin Kudu due to the limited number of beds at the Ringim General Hospital.

Preparations are currently being made to give the dead persons a mass burial given that the majority were burnt beyond recognition.

Reacting to the tanker explosion accident in a statement through the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, the Federal Government directed the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority to investigate the tanker explosion that claimed the lives of over 100 people in Jigawa State.

In the directive by the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri, signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Nneamaka Okafor on Wednesday, the minister also expressed regret over the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident.

The statement read: “The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic petrol tanker explosion in Majiya Town, Taura Local Government Area, Jigawa State, which resulted in the loss of over 100 lives and left dozens more injured.

“On behalf of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources and the Federal Government, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones affected by this devastating incident.
