The music world mourns the loss of Cuban artist Jose Manuel Carbajal Zaldivar, better known as “El Taiger,” who passed away on Thursday in Miami at the age of 37. His family revealed that he had been hospitalized for a week following a severe gunshot wound to the head, a tragedy that has left many heartbroken.

A celebrated artist in the “urbano” genre, he garnered acclaim for blending reggaeton with the vibrant sounds of traditional Cuban music, enchanting listeners with unforgettable hits like “La Historia,” “Papelito,” and “Habla Matador,” which became anthems of a generation.

“We bid farewell to one of the most recognised figures of the urban genre, who did not renounce his Cuban identity and always expressed love for his country,” the Cuban Institute of Music said in a statement on Facebook.

Having resided in the United States for several years, Carbajal Zaldivar was hospitalized in Miami on October 3, after being found unconscious inside a vehicle. Miami police are now conducting an investigation into the shooting that led to his condition.

The musician’s family took to social media to extend their thanks to the medical professionals who cared for him and to everyone who offered prayers and tributes while he was hospitalized, emphasizing the support they received during this challenging time.

“We are deeply saddened by your death but we are proud to have known you and on more than one occasion shared the stage,” the group wrote. “Rest in peace tireless warrior.”

Scores of mourners gathered in a park in the Guanabacoa area of eastern Havana on Thursday night, coming together to bid a heartfelt farewell to El Taiger, reflecting on the musician’s influence and the joy he brought to their lives.

In front of an old church, they placed photos of the musician and lit candles while singing his songs and turning on the lights of their cell phones in tribute.

“We are sad, very sad, but we are celebrating as he wanted, he said he wanted parties, joy,” Yuli Mauro, 30, told AFP, dancing to the music alongside her son.

“We’ve already lit his candle so that he can reach heaven with light.”
