In a devastating incident during a Hindu religious festival in eastern India, at least 46 individuals have lost their lives, including 37 children and seven women. Authorities confirmed that these drowning incidents occurred in 15 different districts over the last 24 hours.
A representative from the disaster management agency stated that the victims drowned while participating in traditional ritual baths in rivers and ponds that were overflowing due to recent flooding. This unfortunate event brings attention to the hazards posed by such conditions during celebrations.
Celebrated for three days each year, the Jivitputrika festival focuses on promoting children’s well-being. During this time, mothers partake in fasting rituals, praying for the health and prosperity of their children, embodying the essence of maternal devotion.
Authorities in Bihar indicated that many people chose to ignore the hazardous water levels in rivers while participating in bathing activities for the festival. This disregard for safety measures has prompted officials to emphasize the importance of caution during such events.
Worries persist that the total number of fatalities could climb further as investigations continue and more information becomes available. The community is bracing for the possibility of additional losses.

State authorities said families and relatives of the victims will receive compensation.
Deadly accidents have occurred in the past across India during major festivals when huge crowds have gathered in tight spaces with little adherence to safety measures.
In July, at least 121 people were killed in a crush at a religious gathering in the northern Uttar Pradesh state.
In 2018, nearly 60 people were killed after a train rammed into a crowd watching celebrations for Dusshera, a Hindu festival.
