Gov Eno Alludes To Possibility Of Dissolving Cabinet

Listen to article

Umo Eno, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, has suggested that a forthcoming dissolution of the state Executive Council, as well as various statutory and non-statutory boards, is likely to take place soon.

The Eastern Updates reports that upon assuming office, Governor Eno retained nearly all of the commissioners from past administrations, with the exception of the Commissioner for Internal Security and Waterways, as well as other aides.

It is noteworthy that certain officials have served across the tenure of more than three distinct administrations.

While addressing questions from journalists during a media briefing in Uyo on Saturday to mark the 37th anniversary of the state, Eno emphasized that the commissioners, who have committed their time and energy to the state’s growth, should not be taken aback by the dissolution.

He acknowledged that there is an urgent requirement to revamp the system, a sentiment shared by the commissioners as well.

However, he clarified that the process would not be as abrupt as waking up one morning and announcing a cabinet reshuffle.

The governor noted that he is holding off on scheduling a valedictory session until the right moment, wanting to ensure he properly acknowledges the valuable contributions of the commissioners and board members to the state’s advancement.

“Both the Exco and the boards—statutory and non-statutory—are due for dissolution, there is no doubt about that. But it will not come as a surprise. I know we will dissolve the boards, and we will also dissolve the Exco,” Eno stated.

“Sixteen months into a new administration, you need to reorganise the system, and members of the executive council know that. But I promise them that we will not do it as a surprise.

“Some of them have served through three administrations. Some were my colleagues in the last administration. So, you don’t just wake up in the morning and say the Exco is dissolved. We will give them the honour of having a valedictory session before dissolving the Exco and changing the system. But we will ensure we choose the right and appropriate time.”

Commenting on the advantages arising from his strong ties with the Federal Government, Eno stated that these benefits—especially in the realms of security and project support—are difficult to quantify.

“We believe that part of the benefits we will derive from our robust relationship with the Federal Government is to secure their support for some of the projects we are undertaking in the state.

“We need to have that synergy with the Federal Government. Even the peace we are enjoying today is due to that synergy. When you don’t have that relationship in some states in this country, you know the results. So, we will continue to build on that synergy and that relationship. It may not be something you see immediately, but having a platform for dialogue is very important,” Eno Said.
