Authorities moved swiftly to apprehend Letcher County Sheriff Mickey Stines following a shooting incident at the county courthouse. According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, officials confirmed the sheriff’s arrest.
The suspect now faces a single count of premeditated murder, a felony offense, according to CBS News.
Law enforcement officials have revealed that a contentious exchange between Sheriff Shawn Stines and Judge Kevin Mullins, 54, in the judge’s office sparked the deadly shooting. Investigators are now working to determine the underlying causes of the argument.
Details surrounding the shooting remain scarce, with investigators withholding information on a possible motive. Governor Andy Beshear broke the news on X (formerly Twitter), but questions still linger.

“Sadly, I have been informed that a district judge in Letcher County was shot and killed in his chambers this afternoon,” Beshear said.
“There is far too much violence in this world, and I pray there is a path to a better tomorrow.”
Gun violence frequently plagues the United States, a country with more guns than residents, reflecting the complexity of balancing Second Amendment rights with efforts to curb violent incidents.
At the start of the month, a gunman carried out a shooting on a Kentucky highway, leaving five people injured. After an exhaustive 10-day pursuit, his body was found on Wednesday, closing the chapter on the manhunt.
While polls reveal that many Americans favor increased restrictions on firearms, a potent gun lobby, along with constitutional safeguards and a widespread cultural attachment to gun ownership, ensures that any attempt to curb gun rights faces intense political pushback.
