Dr. Datti Baba-Ahmed, who ran alongside the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023, has stated that Nigeria’s current economic challenges are a direct consequence of the All Progressive Congress’s governance.
Baba-Ahmed noted that he and his running mate had repeatedly cautioned Nigerians about the potential risks associated with an APC administration, warnings that have now proven prophetic.
Baba-Ahmed, standing in for Peter Obi, struck a hopeful note at the Labour Party’s Interim National Caretaker Committee debut in Abuja, anticipating the party would not only replicate but surpass its 2023 achievements, securing a parliamentary majority and the presidency in 2027.
“We didn’t have a crisis; we managed a transition that was a bit bumpy,” Baba-Ahmed said. “No other political party of our size could do that in the time and manner that we did. We are a force to contend with in Africa.”
Baba-Ahmed showcased the Labour Party’s notable accomplishments, notably its bold move to contest 10 million votes at the Supreme Court, despite being officially recognized for only 6 million.
He underscored the party’s grassroots origins, fueled by the Nigerian people’s determination and the “Obidients” movement, which successfully challenged two established parties in court.
Clarifying the internal power struggle within the Labour Party, a former federal legislator explained that Julius Abure’s ousting was a result of term limits, not external pressure from governors. The lawmaker appealed to Abure’s faction to unite with the Caretaker Committee, paving the way for party rejuvenation.

Labour Party National Caretaker Committee Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to reinvigorating the party. She called on members and supporters to make collective sacrifices, paving the way for a stronger, more viable platform.
Deputy Governor of Abia State Ikechukwu Emetu, standing in for Governor Alex Otti, urged committee members to prioritize party development and eschew harmful actions.
The committee’s objectives were clarified by Senator Darlington Nwokocha, its Secretary, who emphasized efforts to advance leadership across various levels through deliberate awareness campaigns, advocacy initiatives, and consensus-oriented approaches.
As the committee begins its tasks, it has conducted member swear-ins and established crucial subcommittees to steer its activities and ensure the execution of its mandate.
