In Indonesia’s remote Papua region, a plane carrying 48 passengers skidded off the runway on Monday, leading to several injuries, according to local authorities.
The Southeast Asian archipelago is known for its poor aviation safety record, and the rugged, mountainous terrain of Papua, combined with frequent adverse weather, makes air travel particularly hazardous.
The Trigana Air ATR-42 aircraft was departing from an airport in the remote Yapen Islands regency, en route to Jayapura, the capital of Papua, when the incident occurred. On board were 42 passengers, including a baby, and six crew members.

“Praise God, everyone survived and has been taken to a hospital for medical checkups,” local police chief Ardyan Ukie Hercahyo stated. “We are investigating the incident and coordinating with relevant parties to ensure this does not happen again.”
The local search and rescue agency reported that several passengers were not only injured but also left traumatized by the event.
With thousands of islands spanning its vast territory, Indonesia heavily relies on air travel for connectivity. However, Papua remains particularly difficult to access. The region has a tragic history of air accidents, including a fatal crash in 2015 when a Trigana Air flight went down, killing all 54 passengers and crew.
