Vietnam To Choose Next Head Of State In October Elections

HANOI, Vietnam — The national assembly will elect Vietnam’s new president in October, according to state media reports, in a key political event that will see the country’s leadership transition.

Vietnam’s national assembly is poised to elect a new president in October, a move that will bring further change to the country’s leadership. This development follows a string of significant personnel shifts within the government.

In Vietnam’s complex leadership framework, the presidency plays a vital role, alongside the Communist Party’s general secretary, the prime minister, and the National Assembly’s chairperson. These four positions form the pillars of the country’s governing structure.

“The National Assembly will complete the presidency position at its regular session in October,” state-run Voice of Vietnam said Tuesday, quoting national assembly sources.

Following the death of Nguyen Phu Trong, President Vo Van Thuong has been appointed general secretary of the Communist Party, a move that consolidates his position within the party.

From October 2018 to April 2021, Nguyen Phu Trong held the distinction of serving as both general secretary and president, a rare instance of an individual holding both positions simultaneously in Vietnam’s political system.

For years, Vietnam’s ruling party has skillfully managed the pace of political transformation, prioritizing gradual, calculated shifts over radical upheaval, to preserve a fragile equilibrium.

The “blazing furnace” anti-corruption drive has unleashed a political firestorm in Vietnam, engulfing numerous high-ranking officials and leaders, and forcing the country to navigate the uncharted waters of sudden and profound change.

A relentless anti-graft campaign has upended Vietnam’s political hierarchy, leading to the resignation of two presidents – Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his successor Vo Van Thuong – and the entanglement of three deputy prime ministers, a dramatic turn of events since 2021.

Vietnam’s national assembly on Monday announced a raft of high-profile appointments, including three deputy prime ministers, a chief judge, a chief prosecutor, and two ministers, as part of a broader effort to rejuvenate the country’s governing elite.
