The House of Representatives has extended its congratulations to Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun on her recent appointment as the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria.
President Bola Tinubu administered the oath of office for Justice Kekere-Ekun on Friday at the State House Council Chamber in Abuja. Her appointment follows the retirement of Justice Kayode Ariwoola on August 22.
In an official statement, House spokesperson Rotimi Akin lauded Kekere-Ekun as a distinguished legal figure whose illustrious career began 43 years ago when she was called to the Nigerian Bar.
“Justice Kekere-Ekun is the second woman in Nigeria’s history to hold this esteemed position, following in the footsteps of Justice Mariam Aloma Mukhtar, who served as Chief Justice from 2012 to 2014,” Akin stated.
Throughout her career, Justice Kekere-Ekun has achieved significant milestones, including serving as a Life Bencher and as president of the International Association of Women Judges. She has risen through the ranks, starting as a Senior Magistrate Grade II in the Lagos State Judiciary in December 1989 and advancing to the position of High Court Judge by July 1996. Her appointment as the 5th female justice of the Supreme Court on July 8, 2013, further highlights her exceptional judicial journey.
The statement also noted Speaker Tajudeen Abbas’ commitment to collaboration with the judiciary under Justice Kekere-Ekun’s leadership. Abbas emphasized the importance of ensuring fairness and justice in her new role, expressing optimism for a fruitful tenure.
