Japan’s Foreign Minister, Kamikawa Yoko, sat down with her Nigerian counterpart, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, on Saturday, setting the stage for a renewed era of cooperation between the two nations.
This high-level meeting signals a deliberate effort to fortify the bonds between Japan and Nigeria, paving the way for enhanced collaboration.
On the margins of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development Ministerial Meeting, Japan’s Foreign Minister, Kamikawa Yoko, and Nigeria’s Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, seized the opportunity to hold a bilateral meeting.
In Tokyo, the stage was set for a comprehensive dialogue between Japan and Nigeria, exploring avenues to enhance cooperation across diverse sectors, with a special emphasis on fostering business and economic synergies.
According to a press release issued by Shimada Mami, Third Secretary for Culture and Information, General, and Protocol Affairs at the Japanese Embassy in Nigeria, the details of the meeting were made public, shedding light on the fruitful discussions between Japan and Nigeria.
During her meeting with Nigerian officials, Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa acknowledged the fruitful dialogues that occurred during her April visit to Nigeria, demonstrating her appreciation for the collaborative spirit.
She emphasised Japan’s interest in fostering stronger economic ties, including support for start-ups, as part of a broader effort to enhance the partnership between the two nations.
During her visit to Nigeria, Yoko observed the challenges faced by internally displaced women, leading her to advocate for initiatives grounded in the Women, Peace, and Security framework.
She reiterated Japan’s commitment to collaborating with Nigeria to address global issues, praising Nigeria’s leadership in Africa and its shared democratic values.

“Minister Kamikawa stated that she had observed the serious situation facing internally displaced women during her visit to Nigeria this April, which made her realise the need for initiatives based on a Women, Peace, and Security perspective.
“Minister Kamikawa also stated that Japan intends to deepen cooperation to solve global challenges with Nigeria, a leader among African countries sharing values and principles such as democracy,” the statement read in part.
Tuggar responded positively, acknowledging the concrete progress achieved through the TICAD process.
He expressed gratitude for Japan’s ongoing support and conveyed Nigeria’s eagerness to further strengthen bilateral and regional cooperation.
The meeting concluded with both ministers reaffirming their commitment to deepening Japan-Nigeria relations as they prepare for the upcoming TICAD 9, set to take place next year.
“In response, Minister Tuggar welcomed the concrete outcomes through the TICAD process, expressed his gratitude for Japan’s cooperation to date, and stated that he would like to strengthen bilateral relations, including regional cooperation.
According to the release, the ministers had concurred on the need to enhance the existing ties between Japan and Nigeria, setting the stage for a more profound connection in the lead-up to the TICAD 9 gathering next year.
