The Enugu State arm of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has ushered in a new era of leadership with the appointment of Dr. Alphonsus Nwafor as the acting chairman.

This development follows the recent suspension of Ugochukwu Agballah, and is seen as a calculated effort to restore order and ensure the party’s continued relevance in the region.

In a bid to reinvigorate its leadership, the Enugu State APC has confirmed the appointments of Sunday Onah as deputy chairperson (acting), David Nwobodo as organising secretary (acting), and Callistus Ngwu as state treasurer (acting), joining Alphonsus Nwafor at the helm.

Prior to his elevation, Alphonsus Nwafor served as the zonal vice chairperson for the Enugu West Senatorial District, bringing a wealth of experience and regional insight to his new role as acting chairperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State.

In addition to his political prowess, Alphonsus Nwafor is a successful entrepreneur with a proven track record of building and leading thriving businesses, bringing a unique blend of political acumen and business savvy to his new role as acting chairperson.

Following the suspension of its chairperson, Ugochukwu Agballah, and other top officials on Saturday, over allegations of office abuse and exploitation, the APC has moved swiftly to appoint Alphonsus Nwafor as acting chairperson.

The other executive members suspended were the deputy chairperson, Augustine Alumonah; the treasurer, Jude Aniogbo; and the organising secretary, Emeka Eze.

Briefing reporters on Monday in Enugu, the APC Publicity Secretary in Enugu State, Michael Ezeanyanwu, said the appointed persons would be in acting capacity pending when the party got substantive officers.

According to Mr Ezeanyanwu, the party cannot afford to have a leadership vacuum in its fold, hence the need to fill the vacancy created by the suspension.

The publicity secretary dismissed the allegation that the committee did not follow due process in suspending the affected officers, stressing that the party followed the process outlined in its constitution.

The Eastern Updates Learned that 15 out of the 17 local government APC chairpersons attended the meeting.

According to him, this would increase the chances of the party to perform credibly in the next general elections.

Egbonwaonu credited the intervention of the committee with saving the APC from collapse in Enugu State, emphasizing that the committee is resolute in its mission to revive the party’s fortunes and reclaim its former glory.

Nwafor began his tenure as acting chairperson by thanking the party faithful for selecting him to lead, humbly accepting the challenge and pledging to work tirelessly for the party’s success.

Nwafor pledged to heal the party’s divisions by reconciling with key leaders who were suspended or expelled by Agballah and his faction, aiming to bring unity and cohesion back to the APC.

By bringing back suspended and expelled leaders, Nwafor believes the APC will become a more formidable force, increasing its likelihood of performing well in the next general elections.
