The apex Igbo social-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has mourned the loss of their beloved leader, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, who passed away on Thursday. According to his son Jide, the 82-year-old President General died after a short but intense struggle with illness.
The news of Chief Iwuanyanwu’s passing was poignantly confirmed by his son, Jide Iwuanyanwu, who bore the difficult task of sharing the sad news.
“The Iwuanyanwu family of Umuohii Atta, in Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, announces the demise of our patriarch, Engr Chief Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Iwuanyanwu-Ahaejiagamba Ndigbo,” the statement read.
“Chief Iwuanyanwu died on Thursday, July 25, 2024, after a brief illness. He was aged 82. Chief Iwuanyanwu before his death was President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide and President of Owerri Peoples Assembly.”
Though Chief Iwuanyanwu may be gone, his memory will be cherished by the vast and vibrant family he leaves behind, including his beloved wife, Lady Princess Frances, and their many children and grandchildren, who will strive to honor his remarkable legacy.

The Iwuanyanwu family will be taking the time to come together and plan a fitting tribute to their beloved patriarch, with the specifics of his burial service to be shared publicly once arrangements are complete.
The late Iwuanyanwu was born on September 4, 1942, to Pa Bernard Iwuanyanwu and Madam Hulder Iwuanyanwu of Umuohii Atta in Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State.
In a country where ethnicity often plays a significant role, he, late Igbo businessman-turned-politician defied expectations. Rising to prominence through shrewd investments and political maneuvering, he became a symbol of success, with a net worth that placed him firmly among Nigeria’s most affluent individuals.
He emerged as the 11th President-General of the Igbo socio-cultural organisation on April 20, 2023.
The torch of leadership was passed to late Iwuanyanwu following a period of unexpected transition. His predecessor, George Obiozor, had steered the Ọhanaeze Ndigbo through a brief but impactful two-year tenure before his untimely departure in the closing days of 2022.
