Enugu State is breathing new life into its coal mining sector, and officials mean business. Over the weekend, they met with mineral title holders, and deadline has been set: operations need to commence by December, no excuses. The goal is ambitious, with the state determined to regain its status as a coal mining powerhouse.

After a productive meeting between Enugu State’s Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee (MIREMCO) and mineral title holders, the parties agreed to take their discussions to the next level.

They vowed to engage with more stakeholders to pinpoint lingering challenges in the sector and brainstorm solutions that would pave the way for more inclusive and effective mining practices in the state.

The communique highlighted the importance of educating host communities about MIREMCO’s goals and how they can play a vital role in ensuring mining operations run smoothly.

By fostering cooperation between locals and miners, the aim is to minimize disruptions and create a win-win situation for all parties involved.

The committee resolved to boost transparency and accountability by requesting a comprehensive directory of all mineral titles in Enugu State through the Mining Cadastre Office (MCO). This move aims to scrutinize compliance with regulatory requirements, ensuring that all title holders operate with integrity.

The committee reaffirmed its dedication to transforming the mining sector by ensuring that all mineral titles become operational before the end of 2024.

This ambitious objective aims to tackle inactivity, stimulate economic growth, and unlock the sector’s full potential.

In his closing remark, Chairman of MIREMCO and Special Adviser to the Enugu State Governor on Solid Minerals, Engr. Samuel Okoro thanked the governor of the state, Dr Peter Mbah and the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake for giving them the opportunity to make their impact in the sector, promising to ensure full compliance with all relevant regulations and standards.

“We are grateful to the governor of Enugu State, Dr Peter Mbah and the leadership of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, headed by the Honourable Minister, Dr Dele Alake. We commend his visionary leadership and dedication to the ministry, and we pledge our commitment to ensuring that his leadership leaves an excellent legacy for the sector,” Okoro said.

He also urged the mineral title holders to do their best and make a difference, stressing that the committee stands ready to collaborate closely with them to achieve maximum results.
