The Abia State government has announced a one-month postponement of its plan to restrict tricycle and motorcycle operations in Aba and Umuahia, shifting the enforcement date from July 1 to August 1, 2024.

This move is part of a larger effort to overhaul the state’s transportation sector, aimed at improving the overall commuting experience for citizens.

The extension allows for the completion of a digital registration process for public transport vehicles, including taxis, buses, and commercial motorcycles. This comprehensive enumeration is a vital step towards the full implementation of the new transportation policy, which aims to enhance safety, reduce congestion, and promote eco-friendly options.

According to Prince Okey Kanu, Commissioner for Information and Culture, the government responded to public feedback by granting an extra month for preparation.

“We’ve listened to our people and decided to give them more time to prepare adequately,” Kanu said during a press briefing at the Government House in Umuahia. “This extension aligns with our goal of minimizing disruptions while implementing necessary changes.”

To address potential service gaps, the government is introducing innovative solutions, including the launch of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) powered buses.

These eco-friendly buses will complement existing transportation modes and ensure seamless mobility for commuters during restricted hours. The government is also exploring other alternatives, such as carpooling and ride-sharing services, to reduce the reliance on private vehicles.

The government’s commitment to reform extends beyond transportation, with ongoing efforts to digitalize civil service operations and enhance infrastructure development.

Despite challenges posed by the rainy season, road projects continue to progress, with plans to expand the Abia Tower to Onuimo road and rehabilitate other critical routes.

By prioritizing citizen feedback and embracing innovative solutions, the Abia State government is demonstrating its dedication to creating a more sustainable, efficient, and people-centric transportation system.
