Listen to article

The South East Governors’ Forum has reiterated its commitment to securing the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Following a meeting in Enugu State, the governors resolved to pay a visit to President Bola Tinubu to discuss pressing issues affecting the region, including Kanu’s detention.

This move demonstrates the forum’s dedication to addressing the concerns of the South East region and promoting peace and stability.

Led by Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, the forum received a delegation of prominent statesmen, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Commonwealth Secretary-General Emeka Anyaoku, and the Obi of Onitsha, Nnaemeka Achebe, who paid a solidarity visit to the forum.

The governors also extended their condolences to the families and governments of Abia, Ebonyi, and Imo States over the passing of Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, a renowned statesman and former Minister of Science and Technology.

Kanu’s legal team, led by Aloy Ejimako, has vowed to appeal the recent court ruling dismissing his suit against the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The IPOB leader has been in detention since 2021, facing trial for his secessionist activities.

The South East Governors’ Forum has restated its commitment to securing his release and addressing the region’s security and economic challenges.

The forum recognizes the need for a comprehensive approach to address the underlying issues driving secessionist agitations in the region.

The governors have also agreed to implement key recommendations from the security and economic summit held in Owerri, Imo State, last September.

The forum aims to enhance regional security and economic integration, with actionable plans to address pressing issues such as infrastructure development, youth empowerment, and economic growth.

With a united front, the South East Governors’ Forum is determined to drive progress in the region and ensure the release of Nnamdi Kanu.
