Hon. Benjamin Kalu who is the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, has hailed the President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio for supporting the passage of the South East Development Commission Bill through to the third reading in the Red Chamber of the National Assembly.

Speaking at the homecoming reception organised for the Senate President in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State yesterday, Kalu who also represented the Speaker, Abbas Tajudeen, said the bill when assented to by President Bola Tinubu will heal the wounds of the Nigerian civil war.

Kalu, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu also appreciated Akpabio for supporting the Tinubu-led administration and extolled his leadership style in bringing “unprecedented synergy” between the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Commending Akpabio further on the Bill, he stressed, “We want to thank you for how you supported the South East Development Commission bill. You showed that you are a good leader and good in-law, knowing that the Southeast over the five decades has not enjoyed the reconciliation and rehabilitation that they needed, post civil war.

“And you believed alongside myself, that it is a strategic tool. With that bill, we will give answers to all the hydra-headed questions in the mind of the Southeastern people. I thank you, for that has brought a lot of peace in Southeast because there’s hope that the president will assent to it,” Kalu said.

He further lauded Akpabio for his support being given to Tinubu saying, “Your support is genuine and sincere. You’ve exemplified the fact that though we are three arms of government, we are one government with one national objective.”

Meanwhile, Elder statesman Charles Ogbonnaya has expressed disappointment with governors and other political leaders for not showing enough support for the take-off of the South East Development Commission (SEDC), which, according to him, is a catalyst for the rebuilding of the South East.

Ogbonna, who previously served as a two-time commissioner and Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor of Abia State, has stated that the SEDC Bill is the first tangible step towards addressing the degradation in the southeast region of Nigeria that occurred as a result of the civil war. The bill was sponsored by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, and has been passed by the Green Chamber.
